     “Bleeding Heart”

He compared her
to a snowflake
never the same
from one day
to another
and her kindness
towards him
lasting about as long
as one left out
in the sun
but he understood
her
far better than she
knew
he had studied
her heart
with the kind
of depth
and care
one would put in to
a Nobel prize winning
thesis,
he knew of her pain
the times
she had let someone
hold on to her
heart
only to have them
squeeze it
till all its life
dripped out
then
toss it back
to her
as if it was just
a recyclable can,
which explained
the iron maiden
persona
she projected
to anyone
who got near
which on the
best of days
only weakened to
a facade  of
indifference,
but he wouldn’t be
deterred
he couldn’t look at
her
and not see
all the softness
still in her heart
only it was protected
by countless
scarred layers of
armor,
though
how to get
close to it
was a point
that continued
to allude
him,
so he started out
with a smile
it was an honest
smile
not meant to
conceal or camouflage
his true intentions
but whenever
he flashed it
he could tell
she was always
looking through it
to see what might be
hiding behind it,
he kept
all her secrets
anything she mentioned
or talked about
concerning her
personal world
went no farther
then her lips
to his ears
he knew
trust took time,
he wanted to
prove himself
but she held
those opportunities
close
afraid of what
might be proven
if she were to
loosen her grip
on just one,
he sometimes wished
he had never
saw through
to her heart
lying their
covered in bandages
and Band-Aids
still dripping blood
but not yet
out of breath,
but he had
seen through
to her heart
which has him
doing anything
he can
for a chance
to get to know it
personally,
so he’ll continue
to follow behind
her
picking up the pieces
of her heart
as they fall
to the floor
waiting for that
moment
he can see her
heart
become whole
again,
and when it does
maybe it will
finally
let him
In…
